6 million bookings of JioPhone: Reliance sets new record

Jio had a huge impact on the telecom industry in India. However, company diverted its path towards the mobile phone segment. The company launched the JioPhone for the consumers. JioPhone was launched for virtually “free”.

However, the catch was that interested users could get it by paying a security deposit of Rs. 1,500. But the amount would be refunded after three years. Well, we are yet to see how this strategy will work for Jio but yet again, with this launch the company most likely set the stage to create a great Commotion in the market. And it seems to have done so.

How? Reliance Retail Limited (RRL) has now announced that the company has booked more than 6 million JioPhones within a day of the much-awaited opening of JioPhone booking on 24 August 2017. Now with this news, it only seems that the phone has managed to garner a lot of attention in the market. Besides, 6 million Indians are now only one step away from experiencing Digital Life to the fullest. Apart from the bookings, RRL has also announced that it has registered an additional 10 million expressions of interest for the JioPhone.

The bookings and the expressions of interest for JioPhone have come from across the country with equal participation from metros, smaller towns or rural areas. With this, it is clear now that the company’s strategy has worked again. “The booking process was handled smoothly with very positive feedback from customers. Offline as well as online channels were used for the booking with minimal waiting time for customers. Customers in the remotest corners of the country were able to book their JioPhone at the same time and in the same manner as anywhere else in the country,” the company said in a media release.

“During this process, RRL actively encouraged the use of digital payment methods, especially the popular UPI BHIM app as of promoting digital movement started by PM Narendra Modi. As a result, a large proportion of retailers and customers paid the booking amount digitally, thus providing a big fillip to the Government’s digital inclusion agenda,” the company stated.

All that being said, given the overwhelming demand for the JioPhone which has significantly exceeded initial expectations, the booking process has been temporarily halted so that customers are not inconvenienced and receive their JioPhones without much delay. On the other hand, customers will be able to register their interest and will be notified on a priority basis when the booking process resumes. The deliveries of the JioPhones will commence, as planned, during the auspicious period of Navratri in September.
